Jack Thompson

Congratulations, Jack Thompson, you are the first person to appear on the list of Things That Need To Die.http://www.teamteabag.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/thompson1-500x498.jpg

Though, it’s almost a staple of many internet hate groups to attack Jack Thompson. For those of you who do not know who he is, I’ll give you a little bit of background information.

Jack Thompson, a former Florida attorney, is an activist against the evils of society. However, he believes the evils of society include The Howard Stern Show, Rap music, Facebook, and, most prominently, video games. He’s submitted a number of ridiculous lawsuits against these things, and more often than not, he’s lost. He’s attacked various forms of free expression in the music industry, usually against the vulgarity therein, and has objected that video games are not protected by such free expression. Now, as we should see by now, Mr. Thompson is not the handiest tool in the shed, so this should come as no surprise.

In fact, Mr. Thompson has called video games “dangerous physical appliances that teach a kid how to kill efficiently and love it.” And after playing a few minutes or even hours of video games, you’ll know that this is absolute bologna. Unless you have a serious underlying mental condition, it does not occur to one that the stress-relieving properties of video games should ever be applied to the outside world. Which is why they are GAMES.

Anyway, Jack Thompson has been a major opponent to Rockstar Games and Take-Two Entertainment, makers of such games as Grand Theft Auto and Bully. As above, each game that was produced with qualities that Mr. Thompson found “unsavory” was acted against legally and compared to various asinine scenarios, such as GTA:IV being compared to indoctrination like the Hitler Youth.

Fortunately, in July 2008, Jack Thompson was disbarred by the Florida Bar due to malpractice. This did not stop his activism, however, and on Sepetember 29, 2009, he filed a lawsuit against Facebook for various groups that oppose the ideals of Mr. Thompson. Any action taken to the removal of such groups, however, is unlikely.

Now, my thoughts on this are that Mr. Thompson is the helicopter parent that everybody hates. He has such this idealistic view of society that can not be accomplished, and feels that it is the media’s fault, and not society in general, that hath corrupted us all. Then again, compare some of the most violent games or hostile songs you’ve ever heard to the content that is shared on the internet on a regular basis. There’s no contest that the Internet can do a great deal more corrupting. Mr. Thompson’s imposed ideals and general slowdown that he caused with legal proceedings are what will lead him to be remembered in great infamy among some circles.

If everything were butterflies and rainbows, life would be a lot less interesting.

Let Jack Thompson’s Idealistic View of Society and his Imposing Nature Die

  1. I wonder what he would do if he would come across /b/. If there’s any place worse then the internet, it’s the condensed place filled with the worst things that exist on it.

  2. Well put.

  3. Most people learn violence from the news. You can’t get rid of violence without censoring the news, in all forms, which is pretty much impossible. Why do they think that all the real violence has less of an impact than fake violence that get’s it out of people’s systems?

    • *please note: i am what you could describe as a long time gamer. i’ve played games pretty much most of my life and have played everything from super mario brothers to manhunt.*

wait a minute. did you really blame the violence in society on what’s in the NEWS? that’s pretty much the dumbest thing i’ve heard in a long time. do you in all honestly really, truly believe that video games help get all that violence out of your system? well gosh golly gee whiz! playing hours and hours of doom totally worked for eric harris and dylan klebold. like, how can you sit there and blame one form of violence and let another pass completely?

but more than that, i’m sick to death of gamer nerds getting pissed off any time someone suggests that MAYBE spending 18 hours a day blowing the heads off of aliens could possibly be harmful to some people, especially after those people go out and commit heinous atrocities.

no, i’m not blaming video games by any stretch of the imagination. and i’m not so foolish as to necessarily blame “the media” (whatever that’s supposed to mean), but i think it’s silly to simply not even enter it into the equation. now, i’m not going to sit here and say that every single person who picks up a violent video game is going to go out and shoot up a school, but i think that everybody reacts differently to media, be it video games, television, music, etc. and simply because you don’t get a real urge to kill after you play call of duty doesn’t mean that nobody else does.

  4. Actually all of this is just a blame game. No one want to be blamed and so they blame others. :)

There are a lot of events that children violence and misbehave caused by wrong / lack of parental advisory or a bad environments but there are also some cases that these are not the reasons. Believe or not, some people born with tendency to be aggressive and we still not know how psychopaths exist.

  5. You had me worried there for a few minutes.I hadn’t heard of this guy,and I thought you meant Jack Thompson, the Australian actor. As a bit of lefty who at one time lived in a polyamorous arrangement with 2 women,he hasn’t ever struck me as an advocate for censorship!
He IS a brilliant actor though:

As for the OTHER Jack Thompson, men who set themselves up as moral arbiters of others strike me as arrogant in the extreme.Who decides what we watch or play? Oh,wait.THEY will,of course.
